Now it is the end

Two weeks before the Imam’s surgery, one night he suffered from chest pains. I along with two of the doctors and two nurses rushed to see him. They immediately hospitalized the Imam and began treatment. Just as he was taking rest and while they were checking his blood pressure, he stated: “Everything comes to an end and this is the ending as well.” I turned and said: “Sir, don’t say such things, God willing you shall live long.” We were all worried but the Imam again stated: “Now it is the end.” When I turned my face I saw that the two nurses were sobbing intensely. However, one of the doctors, in order to console them began to offer different interpretations and meanings of his words saying that perhaps what the Imam meant was that his illness would be cured and he would be absolutely healthy again. This was the first time that the Imam had stated these words and it seemed as if he was preparing us for his passing away. Also, on the day he was leaving for the hospital to carry out medical tests, he again repeated the words “It is now the ending” right here (in the courtyard of the residence) next to the mulberry tree.
