In a Tuesday address to the ninth meeting of the Islamic Inter-Parliamentary Union (IIPU) in Tehran, the Iranian speaker also hailed the recent wave of Islamic Awakening in regional Muslim countries, stressing that such democratic movements would strengthen unity and convergence among the Islamic nations.

The IIPU Summit has been held in the Iranian capital, Tehran, with representatives from nearly 50 countries in attendance.
During the IIPU summit in Tehran, the Iranian Majlis speaker took over the rotating presidency of the union from Sudan for a year.
Iranian President Hassan Rouhani, who was attending the event as a special guest, had also addressed the opening session of the meeting.
Some 28 parliament speakers and 47 parliamentary delegations are taking part in the meeting, which has been underway in Tehran since February 14.
Fighting extremism, challenges to democracy in Islamic nations, technical and scientific cooperation as well as the issue of Palestine are the main topics on the agenda of the IIPU meeting.
The IIPU was established in 1999 based on an initiative by Iran. It seeks to strengthen parliamentary cooperation among Islamic nations and to solve challenges facing the Muslim world.
Imam Khomeini established an Islamic-democratic system which had bought prosperity for Iran and strengthened the ideals of unity among the Muslim countries.
The great Imam also believed in establishing regional unions and institutions which could boost unity and cooperation among the Muslim and oppressed nations across the globe.
